Rootin: A Mobile Symptom Tracking and Self-Care App for Women with Breast Cancer on Aromatase Inhibitors
Summary
Breast cancer remains a major public health concern in the U.S., with over 4 million survivors.
More than 70% of these women receive aromatase inhibitors (AIs), which reduce recurrence by lowering estrogen levels. However, AI therapy is often associated with persistent side effects - such as musculoskeletal pain, hot flashes, and insomnia - that negatively impact quality of life and lead to non-adherence in up to 50% of patients.
With the widespread use of smartphones, digital health tools offer opportunities to support long-term symptom management. However, existing applications primarily focus on clinical tracking and often lack emotionally supportive, user-centered design tailored to breast cancer survivors receiving AI therapy.
